InstantKB.NET 2.0.6 Update (available Monday)

I just wanted to let you know you can expect InstantKB.NET 2.0.6 to be available for download on Monday.

The primary purpose of this release is to resolve a handful of rendering issues specific to Internet Explorer 8 (IE8) when editing & adding articles within the Staff Control Panel.  If your having any problems with IE8 when working with your content we would suggest you apply the 2.0.6 update.  You'll also notice a number of nice improvements to the WYSIWYG editor in 2.0.6 when adding & editing content.

We also wanted to take this opportunity (before InstantKB.NET 2.1) to bring InstantKB.NET more in-line with our forthcoming InstantForum.NET 4.2 update and as such you'll notice two key changes :-

1. The default "Classic" skin has  been updated.

The classic skin now supports rounded corners for the various "InstantASP.Common.Ui.WebControls.PanelBar" controls that appear throughout our products. You'll also notice both the HTML & CSS has been optimized further. We've made several improvements to the CSS class names to make these more compact & reduce overall markup.

With the release of InstantForum.NET 4.2 the CSS files will be interchangeable, meaning you can skin InstantForum.NET and copy the CSS & images directly over to InstantKB.NET for a easy consistent look & feel between the two products.

2. The Visual Studio.NET solution has been updated to 2008 by default

The Visual Studio.NET solution  has been updated to Visua Studio.NET 2008 by default and you won't be able to open the 2.0.6 solution file in Visual Studio.NET 2005. InstantKB.NET 2.0.6 will of course still work with either the .NET 2.0 or 3.5 frameworks so this should not affect production installations.

Our forthcoming InstantForum.NET 4.2 update requires at minimum the .NET 3.5 SP1 framework. This is because we use some of the AJAX features that where introduced with .NET 3.5 SP1 update (things like JSON serialization & the history control). These are not supported in ASP.NET AJAX 1.0. We want to start using these features within InstantKB.NET and as such as of InstantKB.NET 2.1 we will be moving to .NET 3.5.

For example a common problem we see which could easily be resolved. If you perform a search within InstantKB.NET currently and then click one of the results. After reading the article if you use your browsers back button to return to your search results you'll notice they are not displayed. You have to perform a search again. To workaround this i personally open results in a new tab but this is far from ideal.  This is because we use AJAX  to render the search results and the page is never posted back.

To resolve this we can easily implement the history control however this is only available in .NET 3.5 SP1. Yes we could implement our own control to manage this however we are working towards standardizing the techniques we use within our code so they are familiar to other developers. Also .NET 4.0 is around the corner so moving to .NET 3.5 SP1 with the InstantKB.NET 2.1 update should work well.  We would of course welcome any comments on this below.

For now as this is only a small update we took the decision to ensure InstantKB.NET will continue to work on .NET 2.0 & 3.5. I expect this will be last minor update before InstantKB.NET 2.1 so hopefully this information will offer time to prepare.

You can expect InstantKB.NET 2.0.6 to work great in IE7 & 8. FireFox 3.x, Chromme, Opera 9 & Safari (both PC & mac).
